Oral Health
THE ORAL MICROBIOTA
Oral health is the state of the mouth, teeth and orofacial structures that enables individuals to perform essential functions such as eating, breathing and speaking.
Almost half the world’s population is affected by oral diseases, and the number of cases is growing faster than the population (WHO).
Like the gut, the mouth has its diverse bacterial community known as the oral microbiome. Lactobacilli make up approximately 1% of the cultivable oral microflora (2). The most common Lactobacilli strains isolated from oral microbiota include L. casei, L. paracasei, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. fermentum, L. acidophilus and L. salivarius(3).
Chronic periodontitis is one of the most common infectious diseases of the oral cavity largely associated with the imbalance of indigenous microflora(2), resulting in overgrowth of periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans(4).
The global oral and dental probiotics market has witnessed significant growth in recent years as consumers increasingly recognize the importance of oral health and the role of probiotics in maintaining it (BUSINESS RESEARCH INSIGHT; 2024) (1).
92% of adults and 96% of parents believe that oral health is important to systemic health.
Available data strongly suggest that periodontitis may have overall health consequences, specifically pertaining to cardiovascular disease and associated diagnoses (5). Caries management strategies include maintaining the oral ecosystem with probiotics (6). Oral probiotics are specific strains of bacteria known to support a healthy mouth and improve oral health. They encourage the growth of good bacteria and stop the growth of bad (pathogenic) bacteria.
